WHAT
The operational domain of Neural Coherence Ecology
The operational model of NCE: the practical coordination of Focus, Cognition, Emotion, and Drive such that a person can sustain adaptive life participation over time, under real conditions.
Functional Coherence is the domain of day to day operation. It describes what the four Functions do, what each requires to do it, and what happens across the others when one of them is carrying more than it can. Each Function is described in both its baseline form and its refined expression, and the refined expression names both the condition and the practice that cultivates it.
The Functions are not a second account of the four Infrastructures and do not correspond to them. Each Infrastructure participates in multiple Functions and each Function is performed by multiple Infrastructures, which the Multifunctionality Property establishes. The two sets are accounts of the same organism arrived at by different methods, one constitutive and one operational.
The Multifunctionality Property. Regarding the relationship between NCE’s Infrastructures and Functional Coherence’s Functions, NCE borrows multifunctionality from the science of ecosystem ecology and expands it bidirectionally: each Infrastructure participates in multiple Functions and each Function is performed by multiple Infrastructures. Regardless of the similarities in the names, such as the Cognition Function and the Infrastructure of Cognitive Patterning, there is absolutely no one-to-one correspondence between the sets. No Function is performed by a single Infrastructure, and no Infrastructure participates in a single Function.
The Four Functions
Within Functional Coherence, each of the four Functions of Focus, Cognition, Emotion, and Drive is described in both its baseline form and its refined expression.
The baseline form is the ordinary operating range of the Function in any neurology, divergent or otherwise. It provides the reference for how the Function operates under ordinary environmental and developmental conditions.
The refined expression, named as Focus Navigation, Cognitive Composition, Emotional Harmony, and Drive Alignment, is the condition in which the Function operates without chronic internal conflict, together with the practice by which that condition is cultivated. The first is coherence in its third register and the second is coherence in its second.
Focus — Navigating Sensory and Attentional Coherence
Focus is the active use of attention to manage perception. It directs what information is taken in, what is maintained, and when attention is released or shifted. Through this process the weighting of sensory and cognitive inputs is set, supporting clear engagement with the environment.
Focus Navigation develops the ability to guide attention through a predictable sequence of engagement and recovery.
Cognition — Composing Thought and Structure
Cognition structures experience into knowledge. It stabilizes perception through working memory, organizes information through pattern recognition, and transforms reflection into learning.
Cognitive Composition develops the ability to organize thought as a deliberate sequence rather than a reactive stream.
Emotion — Harmonizing Intensity and Authenticity
Emotion connects the internal state to the external environment. It interprets physiological changes (arousal, tension, or calm among them) into signals that inform behavior, empathy, and communication.
Emotional Harmony develops the ability to understand and work with emotional states through a clear sequence of recognition, interpretation, stabilization, and release.
Harmony is one of several terms used in place of regulation, which implies top-down control over an undesirable state. It does its heaviest work in the Emotion Function’s refined expression as Emotional Harmony. Elsewhere in the framework other wording is more accurate to what is being described, and the refined expressions of the other three Functions use their own: Focus Navigation, Cognitive Composition, Drive Alignment. The tended state of the Emotional Activation and Modulation Infrastructure is Equanimity, which is named separately so that no term is shared across the Infrastructures and the Functions.
Harmony’s work is to describe dynamic, cooperative, flexible functioning without importing control, correction, or a rigid setpoint. Framing the goal this way also reduces the shame attached to a perceived failure to regulate (especially relevant to the neurodivergent), and unlike high-effort discipline, which is effective only in short bursts, it is available to any individual with a living brain, whatever their circumstances.
Drive — Aligning Purpose through Effort
Drive converts intention into sustained action. It coordinates energy, motivation, and purpose so that effort is both directed and renewable.
Drive Alignment transforms motivation from short-term emotional impulse into a stable behavioral rhythm, supported by clear meaning, visible progress, and deliberate recovery.
The domain is where the work is most legible, because the Functions are what a person actually notices and can attend to. Its dynamics are clearest in neurodivergent operation, where the dependencies are harder to overlook, and conditions that hold under that degree of variability tend to hold more generally. WHY
Homeostasis is not divisible by Infrastructure
Together, the four Infrastructures constitute an ecological model of neural interdependence. Each participates in the work of the others, and the state of each registers in the rest.
The consequence is that homeostasis is not divisible by Infrastructure. Meeting the conditions one Infrastructure requires does not by itself produce stable operation within it, because the demands that reach it arise in the other three and because much of the substrate it draws on is shared with them. This is where models that arrange human requirements into a sequence of tiers fail. They treat a lower tier as completable on its own, when in practice no tier is available in isolation from the rest (See Rethinking Maslow). Sustained homeostasis is a condition of the whole organism rather than the sum of satisfied requirements.
Within NCE, quality of life is defined as sustained homeostasis across the human being. It is not the attainment of hierarchical needs, and it is neither the absence of dysfunction nor a subjective report. Both of those would locate the condition in a part or in an impression of a part, and homeostasis of this kind is a property of the ecology as a whole.
Executive Function
Used in its established neuropsychological sense: the set of cognitive control processes that regulate goal-directed behavior, among them inhibition, self-monitoring, cognitive flexibility, emotional management, task initiation, working memory, planning and prioritizing, organization, and goal-directed persistence. Not redefined here.
Executive Function Collapse
The condition in which higher-level cognition is conscripted by threat response. The stable operating relationship, in which higher-level cognition works with the affective and physiological signal reaching it, inverts under stress, and reason comes to serve fear rather than the reverse.
Collapse is assessed through observable reasoning and patterns of action and reaction. A calm, fluent, well-reasoned defense of an incoherent position is not evidence against collapse; where the expression is performative, the performance is itself part of the threat response. A temper-tantrum or melt-down is not required to signal collapse. The diagnostic evidence is in the thinking and its results: narrowed solution space, failure to update against consequences, inflexibility maintained in the face of contrary evidence.

They are not clinical claims about any individual’s interior state, and no assertion of a disorder is intended or warranted. Where a named figure’s reasoning is characterized this way, carry the disclaimer explicitly.
The Practicability Constraint
Anything this framework asks a person to do for themselves must be practicable by that person at any stage of life, under the conditions they are actually in, without specialist knowledge, elite resources, or stability they do not currently have. The exception is triage, where the immediate threat is stabilized and the rest deferred, correctly and temporarily. Outside that, the standard holds. Where a protocol requires expertise, income, or circumstances the person lacks, it does not meet the standard for self-directed practice, whatever its theoretical merit.
Each Infrastructure and each Function is interactive and dependent on the others. The equilibrium is sustained through practiced stability across the organism, rather than built piecemeal.
Facilitated and professional applications are held to a separate standard and must say so. But these examples, like some examples of Coherence Mastery in certain domains, do not sit in the realm of baseline homeostasis. They may develop within baseline homeostasis or apart from it, the latter where a person accepts a cost, self-sacrifice among them, in order to afford the effort involved. A model that requires a practitioner is not disqualified. It belongs to a different scope from the baseline wellbeing that existence itself affords, and that scope must be stated wherever it is relevant.
HOW
Tending is continuous, because the ecology is continuous
Coherence must also be practicable without ideal conditions or specialized resources, which the Practicability Constraint requires. Tending is continuous, because the ecology is continuous. It is not a regime of control seeking to force a result but a practice of stewardship, which asks what the conditions actually require and then attends to them.
Little of this depends on the ability to explain it. A gardener who has tended one plot for years can rarely give an account of why each action is taken when it is taken, and the results are not diminished by the absence of the account. What the gardener has is sustained attention to a particular garden and a long record of what followed from what. The knowledge is real and specific, and it is largely unarticulated.
The same holds for tending a neural ecology, and it is what the Practicability Constraint requires. If coherence depended on the capacity to name the processes involved, it would be available only to those with the training to name them, which would make this a description of a privilege rather than of an organism. What is required is attention, a willingness to observe what actually follows from what, and the patience to let that record accumulate.
Attention of this kind is itself developed, which is what separates this position from an appeal to instinct. Urges indicate direction and are frequently informative, but they are not self-authorising, and following them without regard for consequence produces the conditions this framework exists to describe. The gardener’s judgment can be trusted because it was built by attending to results over time, and not because it arrived unbidden.
In practice the work is a continual conversation with the four Functions of Functional Coherence (Focus, Cognition, Emotion, and Drive), which describe how the ecosystem operates day to day, while tending the four Infrastructures. The two sets do not pair off, as the Multifunctionality Property establishes: each Infrastructure participates in multiple Functions, and each Function is performed by multiple Infrastructures.
Conditions of this kind have to hold under disruption rather than only under favorable circumstances. They need to flex, to tolerate imperfection, and to remain simple enough that a person can restore them after interruption. The dynamics involved are most legible in neurodivergent operation, where the dependencies between Infrastructures and Functions are harder to overlook, and conditions that hold under that degree of variability tend to hold more generally.
On the Far Side of Homeostasis
Coherence as the developmental horizon is the state in which the alignment holds in sustained integration, such that engagement is generative rather than costly and no part of the ecology is being spent to hold another together. What distinguishes this register is cohesion of a different order, rather than a better instance of the work the second register describes. Like mastery, it is reached and is nonetheless not terminal: it can deepen indefinitely, because domains, contexts, and people change. It is required of no one.
Functional Coherence describes it across functional operation, on the far side of homeostasis, where traits operating as liabilities under incoherent conditions come to operate as distinctive capacities.
Where the second and third registers are difficult to separate, the question is whether operation still costs. Register two describes an ecology being sustained, and sustaining it is work whether or not the work goes well. Register three describes an ecology sustained deeply enough that it generates rather than holds. The three registers are set out on the Ecology page.
APPLIED
Where the theory has been put to work
Neurodivergence is an umbrella term for developmental differences, including ASD/ASC, ADHD/ADHC, and certain learning profiles, called developmental because the brain formed along a trajectory that differs from the modal one. A structural description of variation, not a diagnosis, an identity, or a badge.
Within this framework, neurodivergence serves as the high-resolution test environment for Functional Coherence, because patterns of incoherence are amplified, compensation is more visible, and intervention effects are easier to validate or falsify. The aim is not to confine Functional Coherence to neurodivergence but to use it as a proving ground before generalizing.
The Neurodivergent Protocol is the direct operationalization of this domain. Post-diagnosis and non-clinical, the NDP begins after clinical evaluation is complete and treats neurodivergent functioning as a personal ecology to understand, support, and develop over time rather than a deficit to correct.
It is also where Coherence Mastery is pursued in a domain that is not an external discipline: a person’s own neurocognitive function, where sustained work refines a trait that operated as a liability under incoherent conditions into a distinctive capacity.
