Reading for enjoyment with no strings attached
Every essay published here is available through a feed you can follow in a reader of your choosing. Other than respect for the ownership of the content, nothing is asked of you in return. There is no sign-up, no address to hand over, no account, and no list that you appear on. I do not know who follows this site, and I prefer it that way.
HOW
it works
A feed is a file this site publishes and updates on its own each time an essay goes up. It contains the title, the date, and the full text of each piece.
Step 1
Choose a reader if you don’t already have one. See the list below: WHERE.
Step 2
Give a reader application the address of that file once. The addresses are below, under The feeds.
Step 3
Let it run. The application checks it for you and shows you what is new. The exchange happens between your reader and this site. I am not part of it and I learn nothing about you.

WHERE
to read them
Any feed reader will do. These four ask for no account and keep your reading on your own device. I do not advocate for any other than not having to provide your data to a conglomerate or 3rd party, or spending more time on setting up the tech than reading, what is meant to support.
NetNewsWire for Mac, iPhone and iPad. Free and open source.
Feeder for Android. Free and open source, with nothing collected. Note: best to download directly from F-Droid via the link provided.
Thunderbird an email and RSS reader for Windows, Mac and Linux. Free and open source, and it reads feeds alongside email.
FreshRSS or Miniflux if you would rather run your own on a server you control.
Web-based readers such as Feedly and Inoreader are simpler to begin with, but they require an account and hold your reading list on their servers. That is your decision to make, not mine, and the feed works the same either way.
If you would rather have essays by email
You can arrange that yourself, without involving me. A free service such as Blogtrottr or Kill the Newsletter will take a feed address and your own address and send you each new essay as it appears. The arrangement is between you and that service. Your address stays with you and whomever you choose to give it to.
WHY
there is no newsletter
Communication technology and the culture built on it have turned something that should be effortless into a demand on our attention and a tax on our wellbeing. Like traffic on a highway, we are awash with noise, and personal conversation, professional messaging, and every transaction now travel the same road at the same time, and the result is the exhaustion anyone who commutes knows too well. I have written about this in The Highway to Nowhere.
A mailing list would put this site on that same road. It would mean holding your address, deciding when to enter your attention, and measuring whether you opened what I sent. I am not interested in any of that, and you should not have to accept it as the price of reading an essay.
A feed inverts the arrangement and gives you full control. The RSS feed, while basic, has much less friction than a newsletter or other communication “service.” You not only decide what you want to follow, but more importantly when you read it. There is no urgency to look at a new article when it arrives. You can leave without telling anyone because you were never signed in. Nothing is tracked, nothing is counted, and your data is not sold.
The terrain online is wide open and the laws of physics do not apply. There is no reason for every path to be a highway. Choosing a quieter route to participate in social discourse is a small step, and small steps taken deliberately are how we build the lives we need and enjoy.
