What does a society that sustains its people look like?
WHAT
The relational domain of Neural Coherence Ecology
Social Coherence Theory and Model (SCT) is the domain of Neural Coherence Ecology (NCE) concerned with the ecosystem in relation: how individual ecosystems function together, and how social systems can be built and revised so that they sustain the ecosystems composing them rather than extract from them.
Its ground is the biological imperative of society. The individual and the social are not sequential, and this domain does not describe what becomes available once individual needs are met. Homeostasis is never solitary for a species whose higher-level cognition matures only inside sustained social feedback, which means the social conditions are conditions of individual homeostasis rather than a later concern.
Its theoretical ground is the neurobiology of fairness and reciprocity: humans are unusually cooperative among animals, and sustained cooperation depends on specific structural conditions rather than on goodwill. Social Coherence specifies those conditions as equitable opportunity for individual development, role differentiation that reflects actual variation in capacity and interest, authentic value exchange that distinguishes genuine contribution from extraction, and the voice, dignity, and belonging that cooperation requires.
Where these hold, the exchange between individual and society is informative and sustaining. Where they fail, the same exchange extracts, and the individual ecosystems composing the society destabilize.
The Biological Imperative of Society
Higher-level cognition matures and operates only inside a social environment capable of sustained feedback, correction, modeling, and shared attention. Society in some form is therefore a requirement of human existence rather than a setting for it. For the human being, isolated homeostasis is not possible, given the interdependence of individual and society.
Society in this sense is distinguished from a crowd. A crowd is an aggregation. A society is a coordination ecology: people cooperating across time through shared norms, cumulative teaching, and the storage of knowledge outside any one mind.
Within the organism, specialization arrived with complexity, and what specializes cannot also do everything, so it comes to depend on other structures carrying the supportive work. The same relation holds among people.
Fairness
One of the conditions monitored in social exchange, alongside authenticity. Humans track the relation between what they contribute and what returns to them, respond to violations of that relation affectively rather than only by calculation, will act against violations at cost to themselves, and adjust cooperation accordingly. These responses appear early in development and across cultures, though thresholds and expressions of them vary considerably.
Fairness in this framework is therefore a structural condition of cooperation rather than a moral sentiment layered onto it. It is what makes social feedback trustworthy: where exchange is unfair, the return a person receives reports on the conditions of the exchange rather than on their contribution.
Fairness is not sameness. Role differentiation reflecting actual variation in capacity and interest is one of the conditions of Social Coherence, so fairness concerns the integrity of the exchange rather than uniformity of role or of outcome.
WHY
Feedback informs only to the degree that the society returning it is coherent
Fair and authentic exchange of value is an essential part of the social engagement a human being requires. This is why a coherent society is interdependent with and essential to individual homeostasis.
The Purpose Throughline runs from an individual’s meaning-making into expression within their community, and the return from that community informs the next iteration. Where a social ecology extracts rather than exchanges, the return misreports, and absent, distorted, or punitive response is evidence about that ecology rather than about the individual’s alignment.
Absent the conditions Social Coherence specifies, the Throughline is obstructed from outside, and the obstruction is not a fault in the person.
This is the practical stake of the domain. A person can tend their own ecology well and still receive a return that informs nothing, because what the return reports on is the arrangement they are expressing into. The conditions under which feedback can be trusted are specified here and nowhere else in the framework.

HOW
The steward has responsibility and not control
Social Coherence is the most visibly collective of the three domains, and is still tended by individuals acting within it. What differs across the three is the distribution, not the interdependence.
A society is more stable and operationally sound where it allows its members to specialize as they develop, attuned to each individual’s capacity, passion, and purpose, and where it arranges the supportive work that specialization then requires. Uniform roles waste the capacity that has developed and leave those dependencies unmet.
Society is realized as one’s coherent, stable, and local community, although arguments can be made for certain limited relationships over distance when bridged well and consistently.

Where the work currently sits
This domain is the least developed of the three. The applied work to date sits in Functional and Developmental Coherence, and Social Coherence is where the current long-form and essay work is being written.
